P.E

Our Intent

At Sholing Junior School, the PE curriculum aims to inspire all children to have a passion for sport, fitness, and healthy living that will continue throughout their lives. Our goal is to help children understand the importance of respect towards different sports, as well as their team, coach, and all officials. As a school, we aim to build children up to effectively collaborate with others in a kind and respectful manner. We want them to be physically literate, confident, and kind in a way that supports their long-term health, allowing them to remain physically active.

We will build on their Key Stage 1 physical education by developing team games, striking and fielding games, invasion games, and fitness and coordination. They will learn how to apply these skills to a variety of sports. With a solid foundation in fundamental physical education skills, they will develop their ability to apply these skills in different ways and contexts. During lessons, they will enjoy communicating, collaborating, and competing with one another, showing kindness and respect. They will also nurture curiosity by exploring new challenges and approaches and learn how to evaluate and recognise their own success.

Implementation

At Sholing Junior School, we teach a variety of sports that change every half-term. PE is taught twice a week, with one indoor and one outdoor session. In lower Key Stage 2, children will continue developing their foundational skills and begin applying them to different sports. In upper Key Stage 2, these skills will be enhanced and applied in a range of contexts across various sports. Key skills and knowledge will progress from Year 3 through to Year 6, ensuring a smooth transition and steady development of physical education.

Throughout the year, there will be opportunities for all children to collaborate across year groups during Sports Day and house team challenges, fostering teamwork, respect, and a sense of community.
