Homework

At Sholing Junior School, homework is designed to be enjoyable, flexible, and meaningful. Instead of completing the same tasks each week, pupils choose from a grid of activities linked to Maths, Writing, Reading, the Wider Curriculum, and the Wider World. This approach allows every child to take ownership of their learning by selecting tasks that interest them, challenge them, or connect with what they are learning in class.

We recognise that every family is different, and we understand that views on homework can vary. Some families enjoy completing lots of activities together, while others prefer a lighter approach. Because of this, our homework grid is designed to offer choice and flexibility. If a child or family would like additional tasks or more structured homework, these can be requested from class teachers at any time.

Children can complete the activities in any order and at their own pace before the hand‑in date. Each task encourages creativity, independence, and curiosity—whether it’s writing a poem, exploring shapes around the home, researching the Greeks, or redesigning a book cover. All completed homework is celebrated during class feedback sessions, and pupils can earn rewards based on the number of tasks they complete, from stickers to extra breaktime and even a Homework Prize Party.

This system helps pupils develop responsibility, practise key skills, and enjoy learning beyond the classroom while feeling proud of their achievements.
