Computing
Our Intent
A high-quality computing education equips pupils to use computational thinking, creativity, and problem-solving to understand and shape the world. Computing is an essential subject in today’s rapidly evolving digital landscape, developing an individual’s knowledge and understanding of technology and its impact on society. It provokes curiosity and encourages pupils to explore how digital systems work, how information is processed, and how technology can be used to solve problems and create opportunities.
At Sholing Junior School, our computing curriculum is rooted in our values of kindness, curiosity, and success. We aim to ensure that pupils not only develop technical skills but also learn to collaborate respectfully, explore ideas with enthusiasm, and strive for excellence in all aspects of digital learning. Computing prepares children for future careers and responsible digital citizenship, enabling them to thrive in a world where technology is central to everyday life.
The four key areas of computing are:
- Computer Science
- Digital Literacy
- Use of Technology
- E-Safety
Implementation
Our computing curriculum introduces pupils to the principles of information and computation, the functionality of digital systems, and programming skills. Building on this foundation, pupils learn to use information technology to create programs, systems, and digital content. They also become digitally literate—able to express themselves and develop ideas through technology—while understanding how to stay safe online and show kindness and respect in digital interactions.
Learning is designed to foster curiosity by encouraging exploration of new technologies, including AI literacy, cybersecurity, and digital wellbeing. Pupils are taught to apply computing skills across the wider curriculum, developing resilience through trial and error and celebrating success when solving problems. Computing is taught through a combination of direct instruction, practical tasks, and cross-curricular projects, ensuring progression and challenge for all learners.
