Art & Design
Vision
At Sholing Junior School art forms an important part of the curriculum. We believe art education stimulates creativity and imagination and is a vital part to create a broad and balanced curriculum. We aim to develop high-quality art that children can relate to; which inspires and challenges them. We equip them with the knowledge and skills to experiment and have the opportunity to practise and produce their own individual piece of art/craft. Children are encouraged to critically evaluate their own work and that of others in order to learn from their experiences. Throughout the Key Stage, they will get an insight into how art both reflects and shaped our history, and contributes to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation. In Art, children will have opportunities to draw, paint, print, make collages, use fabrics and threads and use clay/wire/willow sculpture.
Art Topics
Sholing Art Gallery
As part of their Indian topic, Year 3 have looked a at the paisley shape. They then created their own 3 layer paisley shape in felt and adorned it with a variety of stitches. A big thank you to our parent helpers in this topic!
Year 3 have been sketching pictures from cave art then using pastel pencils to blend the colours. This helped them carve an image on their clay cave sculptures.
Year 4 have been sewing! After looking at Greek patterns, they created their own design for a bookmark and made it using cross stitch. They look amazing!
We have been cutting with scissors - Matisse style (and Gillian Ayres)!
This printing topic was based on Alice and Wonderland 'Drink Me' bottle. Layered printing, looking fantastic!
To compliment our learning about Russia, we used wax and watercolour to create our own version of St. Basil's Cathedral.
Year 4 have finished their Roman Pots! They learnt the skill of coiling the clay and using slip to hold it together.
After drawing with wax onto our pillow material the children used fabric dye to paint them and a sewing machine to make them into cushions (with the help of our fantastic parent helpers!).
Have you seen these Viking invaders?
Beware! They are too dangerous to approach!
Year 5 drawing themselves in the style of the artist Arturas Slapsys.
The Year 6 have been furthering their sewing skills. They have designed and hand sewn the top layer of their character then either hand sewn or machine sewn it to create a professional finish. They look wonderful! It was fantastic to see their joy when they had their finished toy in their hands. A big thank you to the parent helper coming in every week.
Year 6 have been learning about the artist Alberto Giacometti.
Having looked at his sculptures, they made one in clay.
